Meet Report (yeah its pretty overdue) – 2012 RPS Long Island Insurrextion

Having tried my hand at most sports in my life, stuck with a couple and been pretty good (swimming, boxing) and wanted to be good at others but they just weren’t right for me (weight-lifting), I wanted to find a sport that I enjoyed doing and was good at. Having strength trained since I was 16 (I think I’m one of the rare cases who begun with squats and deadlifts rather than guns, abs and chest) I decided, in early 2012, to train for my first powerlifting meet.
About 6 months after I decided this, I got the opportunity to study abroad in the USA for 4 months (at DeSales University, PA) – perfect place to do my first meet, international!
After working through a pretty standard plan for the 6 months or so before I left in August (getting a bit more mobile and then working through a hypertrophy and max strength phase), i decided that, when I arrived in the US, I’d begin a squat cycle (using the base phase of the smolov).
Them crazy Russians….

The smolov and, with the weight gain from the introduction to the American eating culture, my squat shot up to around 200kg (440lb), along with big increases in my deadlift, and overall muscle mass. At this point I figured I’d sign up for a compeition, leading me to chose the 2012 RPS Long Island Insurrextion.

Travelling from Center Valley, PA to Long Island, NY in November was uneventful, but did include a lovely 4am start on the day of the meet so we could arrive in time (after a 2 and a bit hour car journey). Felt a bit nervy as it was my first meet and, although my buddy Matt was lifting as well, neither of us had any experience – would have been good to have a coach or someone not lifting to manage us a bit in hindsight.
Weighed in at 190lb – i was lifting in the 198lb class, junior, raw classic (no knee wraps allowed) – which i was happy with. And posted my openers,
– Squat – 180kg (395lb)
– Bench – 110kg (240lb)
Deadlift – 220kg (480lb)

Then went in search of food which proved difficult as everything at Stony Brook university was closed (story of my life) – luckily a guy in my lifting flight offered me a ride to a bakery down the road where i subsequently stuffed myself. In future, im taking a cooler FULL of grub.

My biggest fail of the day was missing the call to warm up for the squat (lack of knowledge of how the meet worked and being more concerned about food – a coach would have been useful here!), fortunately I had about 10 minutes before lifting, so i rushed through a few mobility drills and got straight into warm up sets.
The first attempt (180kg) felt fine, albeit getting to depth felt a bit nasty due to lack of warming up. Second attempt (190kg) felt HORRIBLE, depth was fine but it felt slooooow. Leading me to only go up to 195(430lb) on the next attempt (rather than my hopeful 200kg/440lb) – final attempt at 195 felt easy, went deeper than need, felt quick and smooth – kicked myself after as I felt I could have got 200.

On the bench press (my weakest lift by far), i made extra time for warming up and opened at 110kg(240lb), which felt fine. Moved right up to 120kg (265lb) which again felt fine. Final attempt was for my gym PB at 125kg(275lb) which was a no lift – couldn’t lock it out.

Finally onto the deadlift (I lift conventional), which I opened at 220kg (480lb), this felt fast and piss easy if I’m honest.
Second attempt for for my gym PB at 240kg (530lb) which again went up pretty fast and was smooth.
Figured I’d try for a 250kg/550lb (1/4 of ton! and roughly 3x BW!), felt confident with it, but ended up pulling to just below the knee and failing to get my hips through.

All in all I was proud of my performance, hitting two of my gym (and now competition) PB’s and getting very near my 200kg squat goal.
My overall total was 556kg (1225lbs) – putting my in 1st place in my catergory and getting me thee RPS New York State Record for the total – not bad for my first meet!

Plenty to work on for the future and looking for a competition in the UK asap!

Before leaving the U.K. he was graduate assistant lecturer at St Mary's University where he taught undergraduate students on the Strength and Conditioning Science degree program. Other previous experience includes work with athletes at DeSales University, London Irish Professional Rugby Club, St Mary's University, and London Rowing Club. In his spare time, Scott actively competes in strength-based sports, having won a national competition in the UK and won two state meets (setting a state record in New York) in powerlifting. He also enjoys outdoor and combat-based sports. Scott currently lives with his wife, Anna, and son, Leo, in Highland Falls, NY (USA).
